Our Mission:
Comprehensive assessment of cognition, function and behaviour, in the aging adult population. Distinguish true memory impairment from anxiety, depression and other affective disorders.
Utilize proven diagnostic tools in a multidisciplinary, integrated clinic. Offer personalized counseling and education, and innovative, state-of-the-art treatment, all within an empathetic, supportive, and professional environment.
The Need:
Our population is aging. Alzheimer's disease and the other dementias are become more prevalent. Dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment affects almost 1 our of every 5 Canadians over 65 years of age. However, only one third of these people have been diagnosed by a doctor or have had the benefit of a trial of treatment.
The Challenge:
Cognitive impairment is a challenging diagnosis. Alzheimer's disease and the other dementias may present as either depression or anxiety. Proper diagnosis often requires significant time and personal evaluation by the professional; difficult in these times of short visits and long wait times.
Further, there is a hesitation both to make the diagnosis by medical professionals and to accept the diagnosis by the individual and his/her support system.
The Opportunity:
The A.G.E. Matters clinic exists to address these issues. We allow the time to listen to the details of the individual’s history; to consider all the alternative diagnoses; and to precisely evaluate cognition. From this comprehensive, multidisciplinary assessment, we are able to share diagnoses, to listen empathetically to concerns, to answer all questions, and to recommend lifestyle changes and medical treatments. Our goal is to improve the individual’s overall health and to optimize his/her cognition, behaviour and function.
